Mayor to Proclaim March 27 as
McCallum Orchestra Day

Austin, Texas - (March 21, 2008) - March 27, 2008 will be proclaimed McCallum Orchestra Day in Austin by Mayor Will Wynn.

McCallum's Orchestra program began in 1953 with the opening of the school and has a history of accomplishments under the direction of highly qualified and dynamic orchestra directors.  Today the program has grown to close to 100 students participating in three performing orchestras, a double bass ensemble, and, with the support of the Austin Chamber Music Center educational outreach,  several chamber groups and ensembles.  Director Ricky Pringle, who previously taught in the Houston suburb of the Woodlands, is in his seventh year with the McCallum orchestras. Under his leadership, his orchestras have consistently received top scores at UIL concert and sight-reading in both string and full orchestra competitions.

In keeping with Austin's ongoing celebration as the "Live Music Capital of the World," the McCallum Fine Arts Academy Orchestra's Briosso Quintet will perform live in the Austin City Council chambers prior to the March 27 City Council meeting. Seniors Gonzalo Hernando, 1st violin; Caris Longoria, 2nd violin; Catherine Cotham, cello; August Dennis, double bass and sophomore Caitlin Coughlan on viola, will perform the First Movement from Dvořák's Quintet in G.

This proclamation coincides with the announcement of the McCallum Fine Arts Orchestra's participation in the Carnegie Hall Masterworks performance in New York on June 13, 2009 and the establishment of the McCallum Orchestra Performance Fund.
