On Saturday, June 13, 2009, Austin's Fine Arts Academy Chamber Orchestra at McCallum High School will perform at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall as part of the Masterworks Series. The Masterworks Series invites qualified ensembles to collaborate on a major work for choir, professional orchestra and soloists under the direction of a nationally recognized conductor. This is the McCallum Orchestra's second
Mc Carnegie invitation to Carnegie Hall, first performing there in 2006. Ricky Pringle, director of the McCallum Fine Arts Academy Chamber Orchestra said, "This is an honor and experience of a lifetime for our students. Because of our hard work and accomplishments, we have been invited to perform at one of the greatest halls in the world, with one of the greatest composer/conductors in the world."                                                                                     Carnegie Hall 2006

McCallum's Orchestra will perform Schubert's Mass No.2 in G major with the McCallum, Pflugerville and San Marcos Choirs under the direction of John Rutter. John Rutter's
compositional career has embraced both large and small scale choral works, various orchestra and instrumental pieces, a piano concerto, two children's operas, music for television, and specialist writing for such groups as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the King's Singers. His larger choral works, Requiem (1985) and Magnificat (1990), have been performed many times in Britain, the USA, and a growing number of other countries. He has guest-conducted or lectured at many concert halls, universities, churches, music festivals and conferences in Europe, Scandinavia, and North America. In 1980 he was made an honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, and in 1988 a Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians. In 1996 the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Music upon him in recognition of his contribution to church music.

Schubert's Mass No. 2 in G major, D.167 was composed in 1815. This is the best known of the three "shorter" mass compositions, which Schubert composed between the more elaborate first and fifth masses. The second mass, commonly referred to as "Schubert's Mass in G," was composed in less than a week (2 to 7 March 1815), the year after his first mass had been successfully performed in Schubert's home parish.

The McCallum FAA Students have formed trios, quartets and quintets to play at weddings and parties to raise funds for this exciting performance. A special fund, the McCallum Orchestra Performance Fund, has been set up to benefit the McCallum Fine Arts Academy Orchestra program and joined the Austin Community Foundation umbrella to help raise funds for future performance opportunities. Board member Marlene Meador explained, "Working with the Austin Community Foundation allows us to reach a broader audience so that individuals can easily make online donations directly to the McCallum Orchestra Performance Fund. All of the funds are administered by the Austin Community Foundation at no cost to the orchestra, so every dollar you donate will support a McCallum Orchestra student to meet his or her full potential as a musician. We hope the entire community will get behind these students who will represent Austin at Carnegie Hall."
